Thrills and Chills at the Library In October

The Library offers thrills and chills in October. Dare to explore the dark side at the Harker Heights Public Library as it celebrates the literature of Edgar Allan Poe and other tellers of spooky tales. Check out these programs and activities:
1. Book Club: Check out the Library’s online book discussion of Edgar Allan Poe’s poetry and prose at http://librarylately.blogspot.com.

2. I’m Not Afraid: Toddler Time on Thursday, October 27 at 9:00 a.m. and Storytimes on Wednesday, October 26 and Thursday, October 27 at 10:00 p.m.

3. Spooky Stories: Enjoy spooky stories for the whole family on Thursday, October 27 at 6:30 p.m.

4. Classic Horror Film Festival: Saturday, October 29 from 1:00 until 5:00 p.m. Enjoy an afternoon with Vincent Price and Edgar Allan Poe movies.

Celebrate September!

September is full of wonderful and interesting events! To kick-off the month, we celebrated National Couponing Month by hosing a couponing class. We had an excellent response for the workshop; it was a great money-saving morning!

In two weeks we will be celebrating Whole Grains Month with our Great Grains 2-day workshop. Mark your calendars for September 19 and 20 and call us to make your reservation.

Adults, teens, and children come and go to play games and put together puzzles.

“My Hero Is Super” Kids Costume Contest - 3:00 p.m.
Kids birth through age 12 come dressed as your hero! Choose a superhero, career hero, famous individual, favorite book character, or even your own parent to be your hero! Just dress up and get ready to strut your stuff in our contest.

Now is the time to get library cards for you and your family. Just bring in your current picture ID and something that shows your name and current address! Children age 17 and under must bring in a parent or guardian to get a library card.

Whether you get a new library card or you already have one, you can enjoy a variety of events:

Stories, Stories, Stories – Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10:00 a.m. (preschoolers) and Thursday at 9:00 a.m. (todders)
Children discover a world of books, rhymes, and more each week!

Envious of extreme couponers saving lots of money? Want to bring your grocery bill down? Join our new couponing club and learn how to start saving! Learn some basics of how couponing works, how to organize your coupons and shopping trips. Make the most of your shopping trip by attending this workshop lead by coupon enthusiast, Ms. Renee Sharper. Great Grains 2-day Workshop
Monday and Tuesday, September 19 & 20, 5:30– 7:30 pm

September is Whole Grains Month so celebrate it by learning more about the health benefits of cooking with whole grains. Sue Dorn from Family Food Network will be leading this informative workshop.

Monday
Come and learn what is so great about whole grains. Ms. Dorn will provide valuable information and lead a discussion on the health benefits of whole grain fresh flour and the hazards of eating only white flour. We will learn about the uses and flavors of the different varieties of wheat.

Tuesday
See a demonstration of milling, mixing and baking bread from fresh flour. We will discuss the benefits of the healthy ingredients included in our freshly baked bread. Enjoy tasting the finished product!

Author Fair and Book Sale this Saturday!

The Friends of the Harker Heights Public Library is having its Fall Book Sale and Author Fair this Saturday. The book sale opens at 8 am so come early to get the best items!

Meet and chat with local writers who will be at the Author Fair from 9 am to 1 pm. Enjoy brunch while you listen to authors read from their works. The brunch hour will be from 11 am to 12 noon. Light snacks and refreshments will be served.

Some of the authors include Emery Lee, Renae Brumbaugh, George I. Duhart, Jr., Alison Craven Roberts, Michael T. Leslie, Malcolm L. Dickinson, Sonia Simmons Wren, Barbara Youngblood Carr, Sidney W. Frost, Charles "Skeeta" Jenkins, Phil Hewitt and more!

This event is FREE to the public.
